Successful treatment of glaucoma with medicinal herbs

The clinical trial was performed to test the therapeutic effect of medicinal herbs for patients with open-angle glaucoma. Nine patients (33-65 yr old) were diagnosed as open-angle glaucoma with normal intraocular pressure (8-16mmHg). They were treated with a mixture of 23-28 medicinal herbs based on the guideline of traditional herbal medicine according to the differential diagnosis. Visual field test (Humphrey Field Analyzer) was used to evaluate the effectiveness of the herbal therapy. Intraocular pressure was not decreased with the herbal therapy. However, visual field test demonstrated that MD (mean deviation) was improved after 4-10 months of the herbal therapy in all the patients. Visual field index (VFI) was also increased after the herbal therapy.
